Nick,

Screw this colonization stuff. That takes maintenance work. I'll meet you just outside the Panama Canal in December. I am thinking small blockade for a month or so charging a small "passage" fee and we will be set for the pacific. Have you found a fort we can loot small 18 pound cannon from?

Ed, yeah you bet, I'll name a bridge after you no worries. In fact, maybe that could be a new funding technique? I'll conquer small islands, and then sell off naming rights? Incredible.

I haven't contributed financially to your cause yet, but I'll kick in a few dollars for your bail if there's the chance you can name a bridge after me or something.

T2T,

Ha, Horatio Hornblower! Well, I must admit, you'd probably get more inspiration from fictional sailing books than the 'cruising' ones. If you're going to go out and buy a book, get something like Wanderer, or Berserk - Something to really get you dreaming. Once you actually have your boat, your next additions can be Diesel manuals and navigation books. Forget the cruising genre, they're pretty boring, and don't tell you much beyond what's common sense anyway. You'll need that book kitty for charts, weather books, and other such important items.

I seem to find my mind wandering to the subject of small yachtes quite a bit lately (thanks Nick). A little creative accounting and some small scale graft could do wonders for my boatlessness. So I went to Boat Books in Brizzo yesterday all ready to lash out on a new Lyn and Larry Pardy bible of sorts thinking that's what wannabe cruisers do. Then I figured a real cruiser would actually buy nothing and save the cash for the kitty. Learning. Always learning. Then again sounds like Horatio Hornblower might be a better fit given the current state of affairs in the Spanish colonies.

I hear ya. I hear ya. I. Hear. Ya.
This is Arigato Jack standing by on zero 9.
A prisoner of the bay since the greedy marina decided to get strict again about their dinghy docking fees. Kuso. [That's 'assholes' in Japanese]
I now have to consider beaching the boat and then walking across a mountain to get to the coffee shop.
Ah, living the dream.

And you know Fidel Castro resign just few days ago, so there are more opportunities there ;)

Yeah, I think the Canarians will love it. If not, we'll just say Sorry.

But really, I think it's a great Aussie outpost, possibly giving stronger ties with Europe. Maybe we can convince the EU into letting us become the next member state? We have loads of raw materials, which we happily hock to the highest bidder, so I think the EU would love us even more.

For your love of fish Jane, maybe you can head up the Sea Ministry. How is your whistling?

Love the sand castle idea, I'm going to practice now. My first design will be for a large bridge.

Fantastic idea, do you think the Canarian's will go for it? What can we fellow expat aussies do to assist in the creation of our very own european homeland?? But shoud we not set this one up as a republic? Have our own heads on coins and pay duty to no-one! YEAH! So you might have to change the HMS Constellation to LAINH Constellation (Little Australia in Northern Hemisphere).

But a brilliant idea. Somewhere a bit closer by that we can get the sun, sea and great seafood from home.. A thought - is there anywhere in the Canaries we could cultivate flathead, leather jackets or freshwater bream? I've got a hankering for a lovely bit of bream ;) I thought about setting up an expat Balmain Bug colony, but the customs people might get a bit narky - and the logistics could be damn difficult, so perhaps we go with something easier...

And perhaps all this free time should give you a kick to immerse yourself into the ancient and noble art of Sandcastle Building. You could even go to the World Championships as an interesting sidebar to the trip! Get good and you can provide yourself with a source of ready cash, as a quick search on google gives a sandcastle competition in almost every US state with a coast, and even some without!

Even with the bordeom and lack of funds, I'd still rather be where you are than here..
